MHA #4, Sunday Morning
Gladio had walked Stark downstairs after the incident with Liliana. He'd needed the escort. He'd been frightened and confused and weak.
Gladio had offered Cup Noodle(TM) and made sure Stark ate and then made sure he was in bed. Gladio had decided that Ignis and Liliana needed to be alone and Stark absolutely did not so he'd stayed. Unfortunately for Gladio Stark was already prone to nightmares and he'd woken up screaming several times during the night. At some point in the very early he'd fallen into a deeper sleep, briefly, and then Gladio had drifted off on the couch.
Stark was awake again, now, exhausted, and he'd snuck out and dragged himself down the stairs to the hallway outside Summer's apartment. He'd lifted his hand to knock and then belatedly remembered to take out his phone. So, standing in the hallway he sent a very quick text.

"Sorry," she said, distractedly, as she went to open the door, "I didn't hear you knock. What's up?"

"I...I just needed to see you. I'm sorry. I just..."
He wanted to hug her. He wasn't sure if he ought to.
"Are you all right? I thought you needed space again but I needed you and I'm sorry I just...please can I come in?"

"Who hurt you?" she asked, focus snapped in on him, and with the same tone as the unspoken And do I need to cut a bitch? inherent there in her eyes when she said it. "What happened last night? Are you okay??"
no subject
Whatever it was had left him feeling a bit like he'd been hit by a truck, though he wasn't sure where that expression had come from. Maybe he'd heard Crichton say it once.
"I thought she was dying it felt like she was dying and I was trying to help because that's what I'm for and it all went wrong..."
He looked at her, misery evident on his face and in his voice. "I think I will be okay. I don't know. I just...I wanted to see and you and talk to you because I knew it would help."
no subject
"Okay," she said, nodding as she put her hands on Stark's shoulders and looked him steady in the eye, "you're okay, you're going to be okay, and you're going to take a deep breath and them we're going over to the couch and you're going to sit down, and I'm going to get you a drink, and then we can talk about it, or not, if that's better for you, but it is going to be okay, okay? Got it?"
no subject
He shook his head, trying to clear it. "I'm...right. Yes. I'll be okay. And we'll sit. I didn't want to bother you but I...right. You're not mad?"
no subject
Summer waved a dismissive hand, as her other one took Stark's to start leading him over to the couch to sit down. "Gladio's a big boy," in more ways than one!, "I'm sure he'll be fiiine. What do you want? Water? Coffe? Something stronger?"
Yes, it was early, but also, clearly, some shit had been going down.
"And of course I'm mad!" she added. "You got hurt! Someone hurt you! I just need to fill in some details so I know just how pissed off I'm going to need to be!"
no subject
"You're not mad at me?" Stark asked as he sat down. "I didn't...I wasn't sure if I should bother you. And she...I don't even know what she did but she took something and it hurt and I still don't feel right."
He wasn't letting go of her hand yet. "Coffee, I think? Please?"
no subject
"Also, if I'm going to go make coffee," she added, "I'm kiiinda gonna need my hand back."
But the fact that he was still holding into it softened her tone and deepened her concerned frown both considerably.
no subject
He released her hand reluctantly. "Sorry. I'll just...wait here."
Maybe hold onto a pillow unless Pancakes decided to make an appearance.
no subject
Summer, once released, still hesitated, looking down at Stark worriedly.
"Should I put a hold on the coffee, actually?"
no subject
"You don't have to but I wouldn't mind waiting?"
"You could... you could just sit?"
no subject
But when she did, she did more than just sit. She draped her arms around him and pulled him in for a hug. "Oh, Stark," she sighed. "When you said you did what you were meant to do, you don't mean.....that...do you?"
no subject
"She was nearly gone already and I could feel it and there wasn't anything else I could have done but it all went wrong and there was someone else there and then she, she pulled and she wasn't dying anymore but she did something to me. And i didn't sleep enough to recover. At all."
Sorry, Gladio.

Sometimes that happened when you got used as emergency rations, Stark.
"And worried. None of that should have happened and she thinks I was trying to hurt her but I wasn't! I was trying to help!"
His voice cracked a little on that last word.
"I just wanted to make it easier for her if she had to go."

Unless there was something weird going on. Like there had been last night.
"I shouldn't be wrong about these things!"
He sighed heavily, burying his face against her shoulder for a moment.
"And I don't know what she did."
no subject
"And you don't think..." She hesitated before continuing, "what she did is something...permanent, do you?"
no subject
He sighed again, relaxing his hold just a little.
"I don't...I don't think it's permanent. I don't know. I don't know what she did."
Even if it felt somewhat familiar in a way he was refusing to think closely about.

Another sigh. "It wasn't restful. I was hoping I was done with nightmares for a time."
no subject
But she did give him a little bit of an encouraging smile, reaching for his hand to give it a squeeze.
"It's alright, though. We'll get through these ones, too."

He didn't want to die and he hadn't wanted to cause any harm. Whatever had been waiting on the other side for her had interfered, somehow.
"But I shouldn't have been wrong."
Maybe he'd deserved it.
"Can I stay here? For a while? I'll try...I'll be quiet. If I can."
no subject
She might have actually insisted on it, even.
no subject
He sighed, turning so he could slump against the couch cushions while still keeping one arm mostly around Summer.
"I don't know. I'm sorry. I'm...I need more rest and I need to figure out what happened and who the man was and why I thought..."
no subject
She blinked. Wait. No. There it was.
"You mean on Wednesday? No. No, that was--"
There it was again.
"Ohhhh. Oh, shit. Oh, okay, yeah, I can see that. I can see why you might've...."
She shook her head. "I'm sorry," she said, "I really wasn't thinking straight that night, I don't think I really realized what that might've sounded like, but I assure you, that had nothing to do with you, Stark, I just....I just needed to be by myself that night, that's all...."
She looked at him for a moment as if to see if he was even remotely convinced by that, but then shifted so that she could curl up against him in his new position, almost as if to prove that she was totally fine with not being alone now.
"Is this the man you said said something?" she asked. "What did he say?"
no subject
"You don't need to explain. I was just...I worry. I thought I'd done something and then we hadn't seen each other since and I...I don't know. Did something happen? Do you need something?"
He'd do what he could. Once he stopped feeling like he could barely move. Really.
"And yes. That man. He was choking me or he was choking her and I could feel it, I don't know. He said someone was waiting for her, on the other side, but that he had plans for her and she couldn't go yet..."
He curled in on himself a bit then. "I didn't know. I got it wrong but I would never have..."
no subject
"Has that ever happened before? There being someone else there?"
no subject
"It doesn't make sense," Stark sighed. "And I don't know if I'm making sense. But I wouldn't have tried if I'd known there was someone trying to force her through but she thinks I did and I can't...I don't know what to do."
no subject
"Just, you know, maybe not exactly right away..."
no subject
Also Ignis might want to kill him? Which could be awkward.
"For now I just want to be here. Thank you. For being here. For letting me be here. For...for being you."
