MHA #8, Saturday
Stark had spent a good portion of yesterday working on a birthday cake. He'd considered cupcakes because that's what he usually made but a full-size cake was different and possibly more special, so he'd gone with that. And he'd covered the cake with purple and gold edible glitter. It had seemed appropriate and he'd found it amusing. He only hoped the recipient of the cake would as well.
The cake was on the table, along with far too many takeout containers for two people. Not because he'd ordered and received too many. He'd ordered from several places on purpose. That way there were choices. Hopefully at least one was correct.
He wasn't entirely confident he'd done enough for this birthday, given that the 3 most recent birthdays he'd attended had involved 21 bars in a row (Stark was very glad he was not going to be visiting 78 or even 24 bars today), a very large and loud arcade, and a glittery western themed party. He was also a little worried that it might be more than Faye really wanted. He'd have to see.
He thought she'd be pleased. He hoped she'd be pleased. He'd find out either way once she arrived.
[For the purple-haired 78 year old!]

What if she did it wrong? It seemed possible. Likely, even.
But she was still knocking lightly on Stark's door today, as planned. Maybe he wasn't even home. That would, in a way, be really convenient.

He'd been nervously moving things around on the table while he waited and jumped a bit when he heard the knock.
"You're here," he said, relieved, as he opened the door. "Good. Come in. Happy birthday!"

It was secretly kind of a big deal, which was Faye was going to act like a total weirdo due to uncertainty and gratitude, probably.

"I just ordered food," Stark said. A truly excessive amount of food, but still just food. "And made a cake. And I did have to do something. Because you should have something nice, for your birthday."

A great way to keep Faye from descending helplessly into awkwardness (or, worse yet, bolting,
but she was pretty committed to not fleeing today, probably) was to distract her with food. Kind of a tried and true method of keeping her on track.

"And a lot of food. I...wasn't sure what you wanted so I ordered a lot. That way there would probably be something that you liked. It may be too much," he admitted.
It definitely was too much. There were two people here and there was food from nearly restaurant on the island.

"I'm not picky." Lies. She was incredibly picky, but it was usually just for snow. Mostly, right now, Faye was a little overwhelmed, but in kind of a great way? "I didn't...you didn't have to do any of this. Like, I didn't expect you to make me a cake when I told you it was gonna be my birthday?"
But he had. "A chocolate cake." Because he paid attention, and Faye was just going to ignore how it made her feel all warm and nice.
(Mostly ignore.)

"Birthdays are supposed to have cake." Stark had strong opinions about desserts. That was one of them. "So I made you cake. I know I didn't have to. I wanted to do it. And chocolate seemed best."

"It sparkles," Faye noted, slanting a look over at him as she hesitantly went over to look more closely. "Embracing the whole glitter thing, are we?"
Might as well. It was kind of the cutest thing he could have done.
no subject
"It seemed like a good idea," Stark admitted, trying to figure out if she approved or not. "I saw there was glitter for food and I thought it was amusing. And it's pretty."
no subject
"I didn't know they made glitter you can ea," Faye mused. Maybe she had? It wasn't surprising, at least, just really kind of touching. "And the colors match me."
Just calling it out in case that was an accident.
But she definitely approved, even if she was kind of at a loss for what to do with all this approval and appreciation.

"I matched on purpose." Just in case she hadn't figured out that he'd put thought into all this. And the Kahlua flavoring was still a surprise for later! "And it's safe to eat. I'm not going to poison you." Ever, but especially not on her birthday.
"You like it?"

And in fact, she was going to move over to give him another kiss, just to underscore how she felt about the cake and the food and the effort he'd gone to. "And I like it. I like all of this a lot. You didn't have to. But I love that you did."
Total honesty, and the island wasn't even forcing it out of her!
no subject
"Good. I'm glad you like it. I liked doing it." He really had enjoyed trying to make something special. "But I hope you're hungry. Or you could skip dinner and just have cake."
no subject
The rest of it was takeout, it seemed like, and while she very much appreciated having attention and money spent on her, it was really the effort of the cake that had kind of gotten to Faye.
no subject
"I didn't make anything else. Just the cake. I just ordered a lot of food."
no subject
She was maybe assigning a lot of stuff to the cake here out of a combination of not really knowing what to do on a birthday, aside from what she'd seen in movies and stuff, and overwhelming feelings over the fact that Stark had done literally anything at all (let alone what she was viewing as a lot.)

"I hope it tastes good too. The frosting did, when I was making it."
