"What do you think?" Alluka asked, holding a dress up against her body so that Mr. Bubbles could judge it. "No, I don't want it." It wasn't her style at all. "I just wondered what you thought."

Mr. Bubbles didn't see that he had to give his opinion on it if she didn't want it.

Alluka sighed, put the dress back, and went to go and wheedle her toy into a better mood so they could get back to the fun part of working here--seeing the new clothes as they came in and passing judgement on them, quite naturally.

Hey, Fandom. Kanan here, it's Monday morning, I have notes, the squirrels chased me out of bed to read them, you probably know the drill by now.

If you don't know the drill, you probably don't have a radio, so it doesn't matter much anyway.

Right. So. The Monday notes about yesterday's news, where anything that happens that the squirrels seem to care about goes on in town. Jono was trying to figure out stage events over the the Groovy Tunes when Dr. Lecter showed up with a kitten and news that their houseguest had moved out. Apparently this led to Jono announcing that he was going to be wandering around the house naked for a while. Which... sure, that tracks. I had a run-in with an angry flock of mynocks in the freezer at Luke's yesterday, and when I figure out what the hell it is that they're eating in there, I'll be sure to let you all know. New guy Miguel showed up to find out what's up with Sunday being pancake days - they do it entirely to drive me barvy, I swear - and Summer was concerned that something was the matter because of the terse specials board.

Sparkle was hanging out and trying on the new jackets over at Demon Marcus when Seivarden showed up to apologize for last weekend based on something Dr. Lecter said to her. Miguel stopped in looking for new clothes, too, and explained that fabric made of unstable molecules is, surprisingly, pretty stable stuff. And finally, it was Beyonce covers for the zombie band over at Caritas, which started to get on Atton's nerves after they ran through their entire repertoire a few times. Reminds me of a cantina I went to once where the house band only knew about four songs, and they were all old enough that they've long gone from being 'classics' to being 'classical.' At least it takes a few plays before Smeeleeya Whao Tupee Upee starts to get old.

It does get old, though.

And that's the news. Kanan out.

"If any of you watched American football yesterday, you probably noticed a huge controversy that has been kicked up by the President of that country," Anakin said.

"He commanded football players to stay upright while the national anthem is played, rather than kneeling in protest," Obi-Wan said mildly. "It went over about as smoothly as one would expect."

"Not at all," Anakin said with a snort, "as he's not an emperor or a dictator, even though he badly wishes to be one. This has started a discussion about the right of people to speak freely, and what limitaAtions--if any--can be imposed on them in a public sphere."

"The United States has a fairly total and strong view of what freedom of speech is," Obi-Wan continued. "No law may be passed by Congress, or any other government body, that would prohibit someone to speak their mind. Other countries on this planet take a more complicated view - ranging from dictators who make it illegal to speak up at all, to Germany. That country once went to war with genocidal intent; once they were pulled from that brink, they devised a law to make certain speech with genocidal intent illegal. Its neighboring countries have provisions about what they dub hate speech, and so on."

Anakin nodded. "Free speech here means what the government itself can punish you for expressing, not your fellow citizens or your private employers. If someone proclaims a moron opinion, you are very free to say 'that is a stupid thing to believe and I'm telling you so.'"

Which, really, was one of Anakin's favorite things to do. He wasn't very restrained on his opinions.

"Free speech laws do not cover what a company can or cannot do to its products or those in its employ," Obi-Wan said, "Nor whether a media company chooses to give someone a platform. Now, our question to you is twofold. One, do you believe the United States has it right? Two, in an ideal world, how would you legislate free speech?"

"Last week your assignment was to write a story based on a photo. Of course you have a chance to read them if you want," Daria said, not bothered if no one wanted to.

"This week, you're going to challenge yourself a little more. I want you to think about what you think is your weak point in writing. We all have them. Do you have tropes or words you always fall back on? Do you have problems with plotting? Are your characters two-dimensional?" asked the cartoon. "I want you to think about that, hone in on your issue, and go to town on it. If you over-structure plots, write some absolute fluff. If you lean on a specific trope, then you beat that horse until it's dead. If some some reason you think you don't have something to improve on, think about something you hate that people do when you read, and then do that yourself. If what you turn in next week is good, then I'll consider it a bonus. But this week, you're going to write against your instincts, and see what you come up with."

The zombie band seemed to be in a good mood after the week's party. They'd spent the entire evening so far covering all of Beyonce's greatest hits...

... and were now coming back around and re-covering the same greatest hits all over again. Look, they mostly knew the singles.

"Seriously?" Atton called, after the third iteration of 'Halo'. "Get a new deal already!"

Kanan had come in to work this morning to be almost immediately accosted by the cook, who had ventured into the freezer for berries and had been almost immediately chased out again by what he described as a pterodactyl with a vacuum cleaner attachment for a face. Kanan had sighed, grabbed the parka, and gone in to investigate.

And to get the berries. Like hell he was letting a Sunday go by without a berry sauce for those damn pancakes he could already smell cooking.

Twenty minutes, two enounters with polar bears, a high-five with that something with tentacles, and a flock of disgruntled mynocks later, and Kanan was surfacing again with the berries, anyway.

"Mynocks," he muttered. "Someone had to go and disturb the mynocks."

Today's Specials:
It's Sunday. You know it's pancake day.

At least it wasn't wampas, Kanan supposed.

So help him, Jono was pretty certain he was supposed to be angry at Ino over the whole karaoke thing on Thursday night. Pretty certain. But here ie was, and instead of angry he was squinting thoughtfully at the stage through the open doors from the lobby/music shop, contemplating holding some sort of showcase... thing.

What was it he'd been told once? Things didn't happen if you didn't just do them? Something like that?

So that would be Jono, spending his day poking through his schedule, wondering if making a Thursday night karaoke party into a regular thing would be a good idea, possibly contemplating drafting up posters for a... a something. He'd just do it once he figured out whatever he wanted it to be.

You know, all-in-all, Sparkle was actually doing pretty good this week. Sure he still had a tab open in his work browser with a link to that costume design course on it that he hadn't done anything with yet, and sure he was half paranoid about who was going to walk into his shop next, but his week had been pleasant enough, and he'd picked up the biggest, most sugary-sweet disgusting concoction that the Perk would make for him that didn't have pumpkin spice in it. Besides, there were new jackets in for fall that it was entirely possible he was trying on himself before hanging up.

He really liked the yellow one. He wasn't going to get the yellow one, but he really liked it.

[OOC: Open, but for slooooowplay. This is day three of the convention I'm tabling at and I can almost see through time at this point.]

Hey folks, Clint Barton here with all the things the squirrels wanted to tattle about from yesterday. First things first, over at the school, Ahsoka had to deal with a library that still smelled like pumpkins. I hope the whole random gourd thing doesn't happen again before Halloween, but I wouldn't guarantee it. Over in town, Seivarden was arranging apples at Covent Garden Flowers, and the staff at Luke's was surprised to see Eliot there on a weekend when things aren't weird, but it turned out the place has a new employee named Miguel, and Eliot wanted to make sure he got properly trained and all. Finally, Sidon was swimming around the pond in the park, and Khadgar stopped to see how he was doing, and to make sure he knows winter is coming. I mean, fall just started but we'll have snow instead of random pumpkins before too long.

Now I want a pumpkin latte on the way home. Have a good one, everyone!

There was a shark man in the pond today, one in which the ducks and the fish were (perhaps wisely) giving a wide berth. But Sidon didn't seem to mind or notice, we was just happy to float around a bit, do a few quick sprints from one side of the pond to the other, trying to beat his personal best records, and just enjoying the fresh water. He wished it were a little bigger, as he missed the freedom and depth that that ocean gave him, but fresh water was just so much nicer!

And being contained in the lovely park on a nice day, perhaps the chances of someone joining him and abating his loneliness a bit might be nice. It was really starting to become clear to him, especially since he spent very little time in the door with being uncomfortable stuck inside walls, how much he missed having other Zora around. The humans and various other species had been great and interesting so far, but his heart was aching a little for Hyrule. Chasing ducks when they landed or trying to match the flow of the fish as they swum about helped a bit, though.

[[ i don't know what kind of day I'll have ahead of me at work, but the shark man was feeling a little neglected. Open park is most certainly open!]]

Eliot was here on a Saturday.

The kitchen staff were all huddled together, staring at him suspiciously and taking bets as to what strange thing was about to happen.

"That's ridiculous," Eliot said. "I don't -- I'm not only here on a weekend when weird shit's going down."

"Usually it's 'cause the kids are here," the dishwasher said.

"Or the dead have risen," the busboy offered.

"Or when the aliens attack!" said the cook.

Eliot frowned, thinking, then shook his head. "Okay, but --"

"Remember the one where the Ghost of Christmas Present made everyone empathic?" said the busboy.

"That was a good one," the cook agreed. "I liked he one where he was about ten and climbed up on the awning to try to read."

"Definitely better than when he's sixty and all nostalgic," the dishwasher said.

"What about the time he got possessed by a serial killer and one of the customers had to magically throw him into the wall so she could escape?" the busboy asked.

The other two frowned at him.

"Was that a Saturday?"

"I don't even know, that was about a million years ago."

"Yeah, man, we're not talking about ancient history."

"Right," said Eliot. "Well. At least the new guy will get a feel for what working here will really be like."

Poor Miguel.

Seivarden was beginning to think that working in a flower shop was one of the better things about this island, which, considering working with plants had never been her goal in life, said a lot about her opinion of Fandom.

She wasn't in a mood for either arranging flowers or carving gourds, but there was also a surprising amount of apples to deal with. To save herself from boredom, or even falling asleep, she arranged the apples neatly in flower pots and put them on display. Considering how confusing and frustrating this place was, a flower shop selling apples seemed almost normal.

She opened the fridge: "Pumpkin spice cookie batter, pumpkin spice iced lattes, pumpkin spice pumpkin--really?, pumpkin spice pancake mix, and three thousand gourds. I hate this place."

Paris flipped the television to C-SPAN (nerd alert) and was grumpily eating a bowl of pumpkin spice Cheerios. Please distract her.

The junkyard was full of gourds today.

Whether some of the junk had become gourds, or the gourds had been added to the junk...Hera was still trying to figure out. Also, the entire place smelled of spice. Which, granted, wasn't as bad as the fish smell that had taken over until a week or so ago, but still - Hera rather liked the smell of ship oil and metal.

"Stop poking them, Chopper. It'll just make a bigger mess."

Chopper made a rude noise.

Okay, technically Caritas hadn't been closed (shark-induced renovations were expensive and she'd needed the revenue), but it had been a construction-laden mess for weeks, and Kitty had worked super hard on getting it back up to snuff. The floors were new, the bar and tables and booths were new and updated, there'd been repainting and a roof replacement and Kitty wouldn't be able to watch HGTV for a while but it was done.

So tonight there was a party, with posters having been posted around the island. The zombies were onstage playing- and with a table of merch off to the side- Tino was behind the bar while Kitty would either be there or mingling, and they were fully open for business.

Good morning, Fandom. This is Dr. Hannibal Lecter once again with whatever news the squirrels have handed me from yesterday.

In my First Aid class, we covered burns, and everybody took very good notes before being turned loose on a simulation of a fire, which Peridot found fascinating and Kaylin found oddly unconvincing.

Later, in The Island Hates You, students had to try fighting monsters their friends and classmates had turned into without killing them. So, some more practical knowledge. And in How to Get By in a Hostile World, the class learned about misdirection and how to pick pockets; Breq and Tip decided to team up after Tip was unsuccessful on her own, and Mara tried to pick Shiemi's pocket.

The dorms seem to have been quiet, but there was quite a bit happening in town, where Covent Gardens got a shipment of herbs for Peter to settle, Miguel stopped by The Perk for coffee and met Eliot and Sparkle. A good introduction to this island, if I say so.

And last night at The Boards, Iris decided to have a karaoke party. Oh, dear. Kanan had apparently been coerced into it along with Hera, and Miguel, Breq, Peter, Jono, Rufus, Kenzi, and Ringo arrived and mingled, and several of them sung, including Iris, Kanan, and Kenzi.

So, I hope you all enjoyed yourselves, and I should go ensure Jono isn't too upset. Welcome to the island, Mr. O'Hara and anybody else who may be new. And if anybody could kindly explain what I'm supposed to do with a closet full of decorative gourds and a bathtub filled with pumpkin spice coffee, it would be appreciated.

Now I suppose I have to give the squirrels pumpkin spice rum.

*chittering cheers*

The shop was full of gourds. Jenkins tried to work out which of the items for sale was causing it, but with his entire stock emitting a faintly cinnamon and allspice smell, it was difficult to tell. Even the smudge sticks were giving off a nigh-overwhelming aroma of ginger and cloves.

"The scent of the sage is nearly the entire point," Jenkins grumbled as he sniffed one of the sticks. "I suppose it's attacked the lavender and incense too." He gathered the stock up to put away until the effect had passed, but the moment he opened the door to the supply closet, he was caught in an avalanche of cucurbitas and lagenarias.

"It's going to be an exceedingly long day."

"You're making tea in paper bags?

Seivarden gave the barista a look that combined condescending and horrified.

Things hadn't been quite comfortable since she and Hannibal had had a conversation about the customs on the island, or at least that was how Seivarden felt. Frustrated with this place, and with a growing sense of desperation, she had decided to spend what little money she had in a tea shop. Well, it served tea, although there was a preference for the local drink called coffee. She was also questioning whether what they served as tea could really be considered to be that.

"You can get a pot of tea with loose leaves if you like," the barista said, unimpressed. "Which kind to you want?"

"Any decent tea," Seivarden replied, with an accent that would, in Radch, make the staff give her whatever she wanted.

Now she ended up sitting at a table, trying to drink some excuse for tea that smelled sickly of flowers. If she had had any place that could be called home she would like to go there now. Or, as there was no such place, somewhere where she could find a dealer.
